Why did you choose to study at the University of Birmingham?

I chose the University of Birmingham because of its global reputation for excellence in teaching and research, particularly in public health. I was attracted by the University's strong focus on evidence-based practice, its diverse international community, and the opportunity to learn from experienced academics. I believed it would provide the ideal environment to develop the knowledge and research skills needed for a career in global public health.

What made you choose your course, and what interested you most about the subject?

As a qualified dentist, I wanted to expand my perspective beyond clinical practice and understand how population-level strategies can improve health outcomes. The MPH programme allowed me to explore disease prevention, health policy, epidemiology, and health systems. I was especially interested in applying research to address health inequalities and improve access to healthcare, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

What do you enjoy most about your course?

I have particularly enjoyed the opportunity to work on real-world public health challenges and develop practical research skills. My dissertation, which focuses on the economic burden of diabetes in India, has strengthened my interest in health economics and global health research. I also value learning alongside students from different countries, as it has broadened my understanding of diverse healthcare systems and perspectives.

How would you describe the teaching, learning environment, and support from your lecturers?

The teaching and learning environment at the University of Birmingham has been supportive, engaging, and well organised. One aspect I particularly appreciated was how well structured the programme is. During the first week of the course, we were provided with a printed programme handbook that clearly outlined all the modules, assessment deadlines, examination dates, and assignment timelines. This made it easy to plan and manage my studies throughout the year. The programme is also very flexible, and the lecturers are approachable, knowledgeable, and always willing to provide guidance and support whenever needed, creating a positive learning experience.

How has your course helped you develop the knowledge and skills you'll need for your future career?

The course has strengthened my analytical, research, and critical thinking skills. I have gained experience in epidemiology, statistical analysis, health policy evaluation, and conducting independent research. These skills have prepared me to contribute to public health research, work within multidisciplinary teams, and make evidence-informed decisions to improve population health.

What are your career goals after graduation, and how has your course prepared you to achieve them?

After graduation, I hope to gain research experience in the UK and contribute to projects that address important public health challenges. My long-term goal is to pursue a PhD in Public Health, focusing on research related to major public health issues such as non-communicable diseases, health inequalities, and global health. I aspire to build a career in research and academia, generating evidence that informs public health policy and improves population health outcomes. The MPH has provided me with a strong foundation in research methods, epidemiology, data analysis, and critical thinking, equipping me with the knowledge and skills to achieve these ambitions.
