Why did you originally apply to do BSc Mathematics and Computer Science at Birmingham?
One of the most important reasons I chose UoB is because it offers the joint honour degree of Maths and Computer Science. I have always been interested in both subjects and therefore I think this course offers me the perfect opportunity to explore each in depth. I really like how the course is structured here as well which allows us to cover the key topic areas in both.
What do you think are the best points of BSc Mathematics and Computer Science?
I enjoy the weekly tutorial sessions the most. As a small group of 5-6 student you will be assigned a tutor and in those one hour sessions we go through the problem sheet questions and the tutor always encourage us and push us towards the right answer, so I always felt that I learnt a lot walking out of the room.
What is the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?
I personally think the best thing about studying at UoB are the people here. All the lecturers and teaching staffs are extremely nice and helpful, always there to help when you struggle with something. All the course mates or colleagues I met from studying and working here are great people to work with as well, willing to give you a hand when necessary. Living in a city also means there’s always a lot going on around town and Birmingham is a beautiful city to explore as well.
What is the highlight of your time at the University?
My highlight is the Maths annual trip to the Lake District. We spent a weekend next to Coniston Water and did activities such as hiking, mountain-biking and rowing. The views are extremely beautiful and I’ve really enjoyed it!
What advice would you give to students thinking about studying BSc Mathematics and Computer Science?
Do not isolate yourself! I personally found it very helpful to attend lecture and talk about the assignments with friends to share your thoughts and emotions. Remember you are not on your own and there’s plenty of support around the University as well.
