Why did you originally apply to do BSc Computer Science with a Year in Industry at Birmingham?

I applied to study my chosen course at Birmingham because of the promising career prospects and robust support system, excellent facilities, glowing student reviews, and the appealing blend of Birmingham's vibrant city life with the university's natural, leafy campus—a perfect fit for me.

What do you think are the best points of BSc Computer Science with a Year in Industry?

The standout features of my course are truly beneficial. The supportive sessions and available assistance from staff, especially when I encountered difficulties in a maths module, were invaluable in helping me catch up. Additionally, the option for an industrial year provides real-world experience, bridging academic learning with practical application. What's particularly appealing is the structure that allows for a wide range of modules in the final year. Although the initial two years don't permit module selection, the prospect of choosing from multiple modules in the final year offers ample time to explore various facets of computer science. This flexibility eases the process of deciding and specialising in a particular area within the expansive field of computer science.

What’s the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?

The most remarkable aspect of studying at the University of Birmingham has been how swiftly it became a home away from home for me, especially as an international student. The ease with which I settled in was surprising, and before I knew it, Birmingham felt like my own. One of the most enriching experiences has been interacting with individuals from countries I had never even heard of, fostering a truly global perspective. Moreover, the events organised by the Computer Science school and the Guild of Students have been exceptional—they ensure that I partake in and celebrate all the festivities I cherish from home, eliminating any sense of missing out on these cherished moments. This sense of belonging and the inclusive atmosphere have truly made my university experience memorable and fulfilling.

What’s your highlight of your time at the University?

The highlight of my university experience was undoubtedly participating in the Birmingham Project at the end of my first year. I was grouped with students from diverse courses, tasked with working on a challenging question and presenting our solution to a sponsoring real company within a week. It was an incredibly surreal experience, providing my first taste of working in a professional environment. Our team created a website aimed at teaching green skills, fostering environmental consciousness among students. The opportunity not only allowed for practical application of knowledge but also honed my collaborative and problem-solving skills in a real-world context.

What advice would you give to students thinking about studying BSc Computer Science with a Year in Industry?

My advice to students considering studying this course would be to acknowledge that while it might seem challenging, the rewards vastly outweigh the challenges. With determination and hard work, you can navigate and excel in this course. A degree in computer science opens doors to an expansive and continuously evolving tech world filled with endless possibilities. Embrace the challenges as opportunities for growth, stay focused, and remain determined—you'll find yourself equipped with skills and knowledge that can lead to exciting and limitless opportunities in the tech industry.
