Why did you originally apply to do MSci Mathematics at Birmingham?

I really enjoyed studying maths and further maths for my A-Levels and wanted to continue it further. My top criteria in choosing which university to go for were having great support, teaching, and student life. UoB ticked all of those boxes and now that I have been studying here for over 2 years, I can definitely confirm I made the right choice.

What do you think are the best points of your course?

One of the best points of my course is the support, especially in first year where the transition from A-Level maths was daunting. There are multiple ways to get this support from lecturers directly and PGTA’s. Plus the modules are difficult but rewarding in providing knowledge and transferrable skills to help in further understanding on a range of topics. I also started on the BSc and have recently transferred on to the MSci due to the confidence I gained from this support.

What is the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?

Other than the campus and onsite train station for easy access to the city and main train stations when commuting/travelling back home, I would say the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham is the student life in general, socially and academically. There are always things to do on campus whether that be ‘Fab’ nights in Joe’s bar, society events or drop-in study sessions across campus to collaboratively work with different groups of people.

What is the highlight of your time at the University?

The highlight of my time at the University has been attending the Maths Ball with the Mathematics society which takes place over spring as it is a great way to socialise with people on the course and in the subject area.

What advice would you give to students thinking about studying MSci Mathematics?

If you are willing to work hard, are up for a challenge and are passionate about Maths, then this course is a great opportunity to showcase and develop your transferrable skills and push yourself further.

Is there anything extra students thinking about studying MSci Mathematics should know?

The course is varied in the choice of modules you can take and the style they are carried out in. Some of my favourite modules have been the problem-solving modules like Mathematics in Industry where you can develop so many skills, which I didn’t expect beforehand.
