Why did you originally apply to do your chosen course at Birmingham?
I initially applied for the MEng Civil Engineering programme as it aligned perfectly with my career plan to graduate by 2028. The University’s reputation for providing hands-on experience to students caught my attention to apply. The University’s world ranking was an addition to push myself to apply to Birmingham.
What do you think are the best points of your course?
I like how the course was designed so that the faculty created a balance between theoretical and practical knowledge for students to acquire. Most of the faculty here are involved in research projects and some of the faculty members have a great number of years of experience in the industry which helps the students to understand about the current subject and the ongoing developments in the construction sector.
What’s the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?
The best thing would be studying in a place where you feel welcomed by everyone around you, by both students and professors. Another best thing would be the services provided to students around mental health.
What’s the highlight of your time at the University?
My highlight was the early Christmas celebrations around campus with carousels and other Christmas themed stalls. Another highlight was the 125-year celebration at Old Joe in December 2025. It was amazing to see all the students gathered around Old Joe whilst a projector was showing all the milestones by the University on the front face of Chancellor’s Court.
What advice would you give to students thinking about studying on the course?
My advice to prospective students would be to focus on why they want to take Civil Engineering before applying and try to embrace every opportunity that crosses their path. I will also suggest to them that university is the place where engineering disciplines allow them to understand a concept through both theory and practical, if they are not interested in either one of them, this university might not be the right fit for them.
