Why did you originally apply to do your chosen course at Birmingham?
I chose Birmingham because it offers the only specialised course of its kind in the UK. Having previously worked in the nuclear industry in South Korea, I was fascinated by the UK's advanced technology and diverse experience in nuclear decommissioning. Birmingham’s reputation as a world-class institution with industry-leading expertise made it my top choice for advancing my career as a female scientist in this field.
What do you think are the best points of your course?
The course is incredibly practical and offers strong industry connections. We spend a significant amount of time on hands-on simulations, such as Groundwater and MCBEND modelling, which are vital for real-world applications.
What’s the best thing about studying at Birmingham?
The campus environment is exceptional. The Main Library is a highlight, providing a safe, focused atmosphere and 24-hour access that truly supports my intensive studies. Additionally, the university offers excellent facilities such as Winterbourne House and Garden. It’s the perfect place to experience a classic British atmosphere, and I often enjoy a very affordable cream tea there during my breaks.
What’s the highlight of your time at the University?
The absolute highlight was being awarded the Chancellor's Scholarship for South Korea (£10,000). I am honoured to be the first South Korean student to receive this award. The process taught me how to articulate my goals as a nuclear specialist, and receiving this recognition from the University has been a huge motivation for my academic journey.
What advice would you give to students thinking about studying on the course?
Be prepared for a challenge! The workload is intensive, with frequent lectures and simulation reports, but it is incredibly rewarding. I highly recommend attending an Open Day if possible. Meeting the professors and current students in person gave me a much deeper understanding of what to expect and helped me feel confident about my decision.
Is there anything extra students thinking about studying on the course should know?
When planning your life here, location is key. I recommend choosing accommodation within walking distance of the campus and near local supermarkets. Being close to shops like Aldi and various Asian markets has made my life as an international student much more convenient, allowing me to focus more on my studies.
