How did you know that the University of Birmingham was the right choice for you?
I always knew I wanted to go to a university which had a campus but also wanted the experience and excitement of living in a city. I’m from Guernsey, and moving overseas was daunting to me, but I felt well supported by the University. The number of societies and activities at the University helped the transition as it was easy to make friends. It was important to me to feel a sense of community and that’s how I knew Birmingham was the right choice for me!
Why did you choose to study your course?
I study Politics and International Relations because of how versatile the degree is. There are lots of really interesting modules to choose from in second and third year, and I have learnt so much from both lecturers and other students who have lots of thoughts and opinions to offer. No two modules have been similar, and I think it has given me so many opportunities to become more well-rounded and knowledgeable in lots of areas - like global politics or the international economy!
What is student life like for you?
Student life is very varied for me as I try to take as many opportunities that are offered to me as I can. The Politics Society has been a huge part of my experience at the university: I have been on the committee for the past two years and also play netball with the society. I really like to come to campus every day to try new study spots and make the most of the facilities available.
In my spare time, I enjoy running, for both fitness and to be social with friends. There are lots of scenic routes to explore near the university! As well as this, I often use the sports and fitness centre to go to the gym and attend various classes. The university hosts music performances quite regularly on campus, in the Bramall Building which I always love going to.
The night light in Birmingham is also really enjoyable. Whether this is at Sports Nights on the university campus, a pub in Selly Oak, or a night out in the city centre, there are lots of options available for everybody’s taste. But my favourite aspect is exploring what events the university and the city have to offer with my friends!
What’s your favourite memory of university life so far?
The Politics Society Summer Ball is definitely my favourite memory of university life so far. All of my friends attended, and we all had a lovely night, all dressed up and having fun. It is held after deadlines, so it’s the perfect way to end the semester and celebrate all our hard work over the year. It genuinely has been the best event of the year in both years I’ve been here!
What advice would you give to current or prospective students?
My advice would be to take as many opportunities as possible. Don’t be afraid to try something new and definitely join societies! They are the perfect way to make friends, involve yourself in university life and have fun. There is something for everyone, and even some for activities you may not have heard of before!
