Why did you originally apply to do your chosen course at Birmingham?

The main thing that stood out to me was the course content. The modules sounded really interesting and combined with the University’s focus on sustainability, I knew that pursuing this course would mean I would be at the cutting edge of sustainable research. Birmingham also has a great reputation and some of my friends have enjoyed studying here, which attracted me even more. I’m also from Birmingham so I knew I could save a lot of money by living at home.

What do you think are the best points of your course?

We had the opportunity to visit the Birmingham Energy Innovation centre, which gave me an insight into the research being conducted on clean energy and fuels. The focus on skill development is also excellent; I have learnt how to use new software and developed skills such as reflective writing and project management. We also get guest speakers coming in to talk about their work, research or career development or challenges, which I find really interesting to hear about.

What’s the best thing about studying at Birmingham?

I love the campus – it’s so green! The facilities are great; there are lots of study spaces. For my research project I am based in the brand new Molecular Sciences Building which is really nice.

What’s the highlight of your time at the University?

I joined the University's wind band and we performed twice over the year in the Elgar concert hall. I made friends and had fun playing a range of new music. I’m looking forward to going back in the summer term to play some fun film music pieces!

What advice would you give to students thinking about studying on the course?

I would say go for it! It’s a really interesting course and is perfect if you’re keen to learn more about how chemistry and sustainability are interlinked, then practise this through coursework or lab work. Once on the course, make the most out of the opportunities offered to you, whether that’s engaging with the guest speakers or asking questions on the field trip as it will really help your understanding and development.

Is there anything extra students thinking about studying on the course should know?

Be prepared for group work and presentations!
