Why did you originally apply to do your chosen course at Birmingham?

I was drawn to Birmingham originally to join the Orchestra as I was playing the violin at the time. However, I later found that the university’s laboratories were top-tier and had a lot of equipment similar to those in the industry.

What do you think are the best points of your course?

In third year, there is the choice of doing a research project alongside a small group of students. Unlike the first two years of laboratory work, this is more independent as you get the opportunity to plan experiments and work on problem-solving skills.

What’s the best thing about studying at Birmingham?

The campus – there is so much greenery on the walk to any of your lectures and all the facilities and building are in the same location, unlike city universities. The library is also open 24/7 which is great for those who prefer studying at night.

What’s the highlight of your time at the University?

Joining the Malaysian society was such a great experience for me as I got to be the Vice President in my 2nd year. Despite having a lot of work to do, the outcomes of the hard work were very worth it, and I got to meet a lot of my closest friends because of the society.

What advice would you give to students thinking about studying on the course?

Explore the different pathways within Chemistry before applying. There are courses such as the 4-year Chemistry with Industrial Placement programme or Chemistry with Drug Discovery etc. Have an idea of what you would like to do, especially if you would opt for the Industrial Placement or Year Abroad programme, so you know what to work towards to once you start university.

Is there anything extra students thinking about studying on the course should know?

The first year of the course does not currently count towards the final grade and this takes the pressure off when you are transitioning from A levels to university. However, you still do need to pass all modules to move forward in the course. Additionally, if you are planning to apply for the Industry Abroad or Study Abroad pathways, the department will use your first year grades to consider your eligibility.
