Why did you originally apply to do BSc Mathematics and Computer Science with Industrial Year at Birmingham?

I chose to apply for the Maths and Computer Science BSc with an industrial year at Birmingham because it perfectly aligned with my academic interests and career aspirations. My passion for mathematics and keen interest in technology made this course particularly appealing. Moreover, the inclusion of an industrial year was a significant factor in my decision-making process. I was eager to gain practical, real-world experience that I knew would complement the theoretical knowledge offered during my academic study. The opportunity to apply what I learned in a professional setting was invaluable to me, as I aimed to not only understand the concepts theoretically but also see their practical applications.

What do you think are the best points of your course?

The coding segments are a highlight for me; witnessing the results of my coding efforts feels incredibly rewarding—it's like seeing ideas come to life. Additionally, the industrial year stands out as a valuable opportunity to gain firsthand experience in a professional environment. I anticipate this experience will significantly enhance my understanding by applying classroom theories to real-world scenarios. Moreover, the supportive environment provided in the mathematics part of the course is instrumental in tackling complex concepts.

What’s the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?

The best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham is the incredible campus. Beyond its beauty and historic buildings, the campus also has great facilities such as the library and various study spaces, making it convenient to access resources and find the perfect spot to focus. Having everything in one place creates a strong sense of community among students, making the university feel like a welcoming and vibrant home away from home.

What’s your highlight of your time at the University?

The highlight of my time at university was the free events organised by the Guild of Students at the Vale. The vibrant atmosphere created by events like the open-air cinema, carnival games, and fun fair rides was amazing. These gatherings provided not just entertainment but also a sense of community, bringing students together for moments of fun and relaxation amid the academic hustle. The opportunity to enjoy these events, especially for free, added a fantastic social aspect to my university life, creating cherished memories and creating a real sense of communit

What advice would you give to students thinking about studying BSc Mathematics and Computer Science with Industrial Year?

If I were to advise students thinking about studying this course, I would emphasise that having a genuine interest in the course is crucial because without it, the academic journey might become challenging and less enjoyable. Studying a course solely due to external influences can lead to disengagement and a lack of motivation when faced with the demands of the curriculum. It's essential to understand that any course, particularly a challenging one, demands perseverance and dedication. However, having a genuine passion for the subject will serve as a driving force during tough times. It will fuel the determination to overcome obstacles, keep going, and ultimately succeed in the field.
