Why did you originally apply to do MSci Chemistry with a Year in Industry at Birmingham?

I have always been interested in STEM subjects; however I especially enjoyed A Level Chemistry at school. I was not sure what I wanted to do as a career, but I knew Chemistry opened many doors for potential careers in the future so would allow me more time to think. After visiting Birmingham for an open day, I knew Chemistry was the degree for me after seeing their amazing lab facilities and their teaching styles.

What do you think are the best points of MSci Chemistry with a Year in Industry?

The tutorials are one of the best parts of Chemistry at Birmingham. They allow you to test your knowledge with application questions then attend a small group teaching session where you get 1 on 1 time with a lecturer to ask as many questions as you like about the topic. It is really helpful as sometimes in lectures you do not get the chance to ask in depth questions.

What is the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?

There are a massive range of study spaces on campus, from the library to small hidden away study spaces which are always so quiet. Being able to have this wide variety of places to choose from helps motivate me to get out of the house and go onto campus to study.

What is the highlight of your time at the University?

Having the opportunity to do an internship with one of the big research groups within the school of Chemistry. This opportunity was given to me through a scholarship I was awarded from the school. I was able to gain 3 weeks of independent lab experience which has massively improved my employability, especially when applying for industrial placement. This opportunity is unique to Birmingham.

Being able to interact with the lecturers and talk to them about all the opportunities available massively motivated me to work hard so I could get a place at Birmingham. Also being able to see the labs in person was such an amazing experience. In addition, the course is challenging as there is a lot of contact hours per week. Is there anything extra students thinking about studying MSci Chemistry with a Year in Industry should know?

The Chemistry department are so generous with the events they put on. For example, at the end of my second semester of year 2 the department organised a Domino’s pizza and drinks night to celebrate us finishing our labs. Events like this are so fun to get together with your whole year group and casually chat to lecturers about anything! It’s a really fun way to get to know your lecturers more.
