Why did you originally apply to do your chosen course at Birmingham?

Birmingham placed very highly in research quality and on course rankings for astrophysics. It was important to me that there were lots of opportunities to get involved in Physics outside my course and Birmingham seems well suited to that.

What do you think are the best points of your course?

I’ve really enjoyed how early in the course you can begin to specialise in a chosen subject. Even in first year there are specialised routes one can take, such as Astro labs.

What’s the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?

The number of opportunities to get involved with things that aren’t strictly part of the course. I have loved being on the committee of the astronomical society; I will be doing an internship with the school in the summer of my second year; I have met loads of amazing people who have helped me explore my interests in astronomy far beyond my course.

What’s your highlight of your time at the Birmingham?

Getting to work on the University observatory; helping make repairs and using research grade equipment has been an incredible privilege I wouldn’t have had if not for the amazing staff members that look after the observatory.

What advice would you give to students thinking about studying on the course?

Ask yourself how would you like to be assessed? Do exams suit you? Make sure you make the most of being around academics, it is a unique time for engaging with fascinating people; don’t waste it. Enjoy life though, don’t make everything about your course; find something that interests you and join societies. There is no better place to find like-minded people.

Is there anything extra students thinking about studying on the course should know?

There are a lot of exams in the summer compared to many places, and no winter exams.
