My Graduate Story
I studied Biological Sciences with a specialisation in Genetics at the University of Birmingham. After graduating, I worked in the Indian government in the policy space for eight years before moving into my current role as a Public Health and Policy Advisor, independently advising a number of organisations in India in different capacities.
I chose the University of Birmingham because of its strong Life Sciences faculty and the cutting-edge research being carried out in genetics. As an international student, I also valued its diverse community and the fact that a degree from Birmingham carries weight and recognition across the world.
A Day in my Life
In my current role, I work independently with different organisations in India, advising on public health and policy issues. My day can involve research, policy analysis, stakeholder engagement, and working with diverse groups to create meaningful impact.
My Journey
The technical knowledge, transferable skills, and international perspective I gained at Birmingham laid the foundation for my career. My government role in India built on those skills and networks, eventually leading me to work independently as a Public Health and Policy Advisor.
My Birmingham Experience
Birmingham gave me not only subject expertise but also transferable skills such as communicating with diverse audiences and engaging in multicultural settings where different stakeholders bring different perspectives. These have been critical in every role I have taken on since graduating.
Birmingham's Impact
The University helped me develop beyond my technical field, giving me the confidence and ability to work across disciplines and cultures. The value of the degree is recognised globally, which has helped me succeed across roles and organisations in India and beyond.
My Achievements
- Eight years in government working in policy at a national level.
- Now independently advising multiple organisations in India on public health and policy.
- Building a career based on skills and networks first developed at Birmingham.
