My Graduate Story
I chose to study at the University of Birmingham mainly because of my supervisor, Professor John Bryson, who is an expert in this field and shared an interest in my research. We worked together for five years, and it was a beautiful journey. During my PhD, I had many opportunities to attend conferences at different university campuses and meet professors, which expanded my professional network and helped me connect with my current employers.
The University of Birmingham’s strong international ranking also supported me in job applications, giving me credibility and standing both during and after interviews. The research experience and networks I developed at Birmingham have been invaluable to my academic career.
A Day in my Life
Currently, I am working in academic research. My daily life involves continuing the work I began at Birmingham: engaging with my field, conducting research, and building on the networks I established during my PhD.
My Journey
Through conferences and networking supported by my supervisor and the University, I connected with people in the field who later became important to my career progression. These opportunities directly contributed to me securing my current role in academia.
My Birmingham Experience
When I first joined in 2012, I was supported by the Guangzhou Centre of the University of Birmingham. Even though I missed the pre-departure briefing, the staff provided me with helpful guides and additional information about travel and settling into Birmingham. They went beyond their duty to help me as both a student and future alumni.
The University continues to support me as alumni, visiting China every year to connect with graduates and organising graduation celebrations across different cities. Being a Chinese alumnus of the University of Birmingham is a truly lovely experience.
Birmingham's Impact
The University helped me build the networks, research skills, and credibility that made my transition into academic research much easier. Its international ranking also gave me confidence and recognition when applying for roles.
My Achievements
I successfully completed a five-year PhD journey in Strategic Management, building lasting academic networks, publishing research, and progressing into a career in academia.
Advice for Students
I would encourage future students to enjoy their studies at Birmingham while also exploring the city. Use the libraries, attend forums and conferences, and make the most of societies to meet people, share ideas, and expand your perspectives. Try to engage fully in both academic and social opportunities.
