My Graduate Story
I am currently a second-year PhD candidate in Global Health at the Vanke School of Public Health, Tsinghua University, China. My primary research interests focus on maternal and child health, social determinants of health, and tobacco control, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
A day in my life
My work usually involves both research and hands-on projects. On the research side, that means lots of reading, working with data, and writing, which often takes consistent effort over a long time. For the projects, I'm mostly involved in liaising with others, doing paperwork, and handling communication tasks.
My Birmingham Experience
As I continue my academic journey, I see my time at UoB as a meaningful starting point. I met my supervisor, she is one of the best mentors I've had, who introduced me to how academia truly works and how to approach it efficiently and effectively. Over nearly two years, I became more self-motivated, adaptable, and developed stronger critical thinking skills. Support from wellbeing services, career guidance, and academic resources, especially from the psychology department, made the journey smoother, more fulfilling, and more enjoyable. These experiences helped shape my mindset and built a strong foundation that I carry forward in both my career and life.
Birmingham's Impact
My learning experience at UoB took place during the COVID period, so nearly half of my academic journey was spent in quarantine. The University offered heartfelt care and support. As an international student, I received special consideration, including access to psychological services and healthcare advice. The Careers Network and other support services helped me stay focused and feel less alone. I also attended several events hosted by the careers team for CV reviews and job guidance. Even after returning to China, the support and advice I received continue to benefit me.
My tips for new students
- Find what you love and go after it
- Uncertainty fuels anxiety, clarity brings momentum
- Stay resilient
My biggest achievements whilst at Birmingham
I haven't thought through it but completing my PhD involving a large amount of lab experiments during COVID is definitely one of them. Others, for example, organising global conferences.
