Hi, I’m Zara, and I’m really excited to be President of BiomedSoc this year. I want to help make it a welcoming space where students can meet new people, make friends, and get the most out of university - whether that’s through socials, academic events, or careers opportunities.
Alongside my degree, I work as a Maths and Science tutor and as a Student Ambassador for the University. Tutoring is honestly one of the most rewarding things I do. I love helping students feel more confident and seeing their hard work pay off in exams. As a Student Ambassador, I also get to speak to prospective students at open days, share my own experience of university, and hopefully help them feel more excited (and less nervous) about starting.
When I first started Biomedical Science, I wasn’t sure which area I wanted to go into. But the more I learnt, the more I became interested in microbiology and immunology - especially how infections develop and how our immune system fights back. My internship in France gave me the chance to explore these interests further, and practical lab sessions have been really useful for putting what I learn in lectures into practice and getting hands-on experience.
What first drew me to Biomedical Science was the chance to understand what happens behind the scenes in healthcare and medical research. I’ve always been curious about the science behind disease and how research helps us understand the human body in more depth. It’s also made me really appreciate the scientists and researchers whose work leads to medical breakthroughs and better healthcare for everyone. There’s still so much to discover beyond what we can see on the surface, and being able to explore that through my degree is something I really love. If you’re interested in health, disease, and research, Biomedical Science is such a great degree. You’ll never run out of new things to discover.
