My path to working in humanitarian emergencies

Since the start of my university journey, I have been drawn to the idea of working in humanitarian emergencies with an international organization, such as the United Nations. The prospect of responding to crises, supporting communities in need, and shaping long-term solutions excites me, and my studies in International Development and Politics have provided a strong foundation for this career path.

Academic preparation for humanitarian work

From my first year, I immersed myself in learning about the core principles of international development. I gained an understanding of how policies, economic systems, and global governance structures shape development outcomes. These foundational concepts allowed me to critically assess global humanitarian challenges.

In my second year, I deepened my knowledge through modules such as Understanding Development Assistance and Working in Development. These courses helped me explore the structure of aid, how funding is distributed, and the ethical considerations behind international assistance. Additionally, in Working in Development, I designed a project tackling knife crime and developed a funding proposal for it. This experience gave me practical insight into how development professionals design interventions, apply for grants, and measure impact. It was an eye-opening experience that made me realize the importance of both strategy and adaptability in humanitarian work.

Now, in my third year, I am exploring more complex and often overlooked topics such as human rights in development and environmental issues. These areas are crucial in humanitarian work, as marginalized communities are often disproportionately affected by crises. Understanding the intersection between development, human rights, and environmental justice will further prepare me for a role in international organizations tackling humanitarian emergencies.

Experiential learning and practical experience

Beyond my coursework, I have actively sought experiences that align with my career aspirations. My involvement in a climate simulation event at Chatham House allowed me to engage in high-level discussions on climate finance and global policies - an essential aspect of humanitarian response, especially in the context of climate-induced disasters.

Additionally, my volunteer work with the United Nations in Sudan, where I helped distribute School in a Box educational materials to underserved villages, gave me first-hand exposure to the logistical and strategic challenges of humanitarian aid. This experience reaffirmed my desire to work in emergency response, where education, health, and infrastructure support are critical in times of crisis.

What excites me about the future

Looking ahead, I am eager to apply my knowledge and skills to real-world humanitarian challenges. The possibility of working in emergency response, whether in conflict zones or natural disaster settings, motivates me. The idea of collaborating with experts from diverse backgrounds, implementing aid projects, and witnessing the tangible impact of my work excites me.

I am particularly interested in roles that involve disaster relief coordination, policy advising, and field operations. The ability to adapt to fast-changing environments while ensuring that aid reaches those most in need is a challenge I am ready to take on. My goal is to contribute to solutions that not only address immediate humanitarian needs but also build resilience within affected communities.

My university experience has been instrumental in shaping my aspirations to work in humanitarian emergencies. The knowledge I have gained, coupled with hands-on experiences, has equipped me with the tools to make a meaningful impact in this field. As I prepare for the next steps after graduation, I look forward to joining an international organization where I can apply my skills, continue learning, and contribute to global humanitarian efforts.
