Students walking in across the University of Birmingham campus

I'm going to be honest with you, when I got the email about my offer-holder visit day at Birmingham, I nearly didn't go. I'd already scrolled through the website about a hundred times and thought I read everything I needed to know. Plus, I was a bit nervous about the whole thing.

Yet, I’m so glad I decided to attend

From the moment I arrived, the energy was completely different from what I expected. It was nothing like open day - it felt more personal. Everything was tailored to Business Management, with sessions run by lecturers from the Business School who teach this subject and were talking about real projects and opportunities.

But the highlight for me was chatting with current students. I sat there listening to them talk about travelling abroad with the Business School, entering competitions and gaining cool experiences that had nothing to do with a textbook. I didn't even know half of these opportunities existed. A few students told me about being part of the various societies and what it involved: the socials, the friendships, how they'd built this whole community alongside their degree. Hearing that made me feel so excited. I could already picture myself there, meeting new people through my course and societies.

Then came the bit that sealed it! I found out the Business Management degree was way more flexible than I initially realised. You can add or remove a placement year right up until the end of your second year – so, no pressure to decide everything straight away. This was massive for me because as I wasn't sure about a year in industry at that point, but knowing I had the option gave me so much breathing room. Fast forward to now, I completed my placement at Snapchat. The Business School careers service helped me every step of the way, from applications to interview prep. And I don't think any of that would have happened if I hadn't come to the visit day and been inspired by what was possible.

I walked in that morning feeling unsure and walked out properly excited about my future. So even if you think you've already made up your mind or you're not sure if it's worth the trip, just go! You'll learn things you can't find on a website, meet people who might end up being your future mates, and get that gut feeling about whether this is the place for you.
