My 4 favourite places to visit in Brum as a student

Harry talks through his favourite places to visit in Birmingham as a uni student

Let’s face it, Brum gets a bad rap in the media, but having lived here for a year now, I’m happy to say that moving to Birmingham, the UK’s second biggest city, was a great idea, with many fun things to do, see and explore – it’s the city to live in. Here’s some of my fave Brum spots…

1) The Goose

What would student life at uni be like without the Goose? Quite frankly, I do not want to know that scary, alternate reality. I don’t doubt that you will stumble your way into the Goose during Freshers’ Week, unbeknownst that you are surrounded by its sacred walls.

The Goose is incredibly spacious, with projectors, multiple television screens, a Jukebox and beer garden, it truly has everything a student needs to unwind. A big shoutout to the owner as well, a real character who I honestly think should receive an honorary degree at this point. Need to get loose? Head to the Goose.

2) Lane 7

You will come to understand that Birmingham does things a little differently, and what better example than Lane 7 on New Street. Whilst this venue is centred around bowling, you would be mistaken if you thought that was all they offered. Interactive floor games, curling, pool, snooker, shooting pods, ping pong and karaoke. That’s without the mention of the whole floor dedicated to arcade games. My favourite part about Lane 7 is the line of retro games consoles which you can play some legendary classics on, all for free, perfect for those on a budget!

3) Winterbourne House and Garden

Okay, this one might be a bit biased, however I think it is entirely justified. If you are ever feeling stressed out, or your mind is running at a million miles an hour, visit Winterbourne House and Garden. University of Birmingham students get completely free admission, and there is much to do.

Explore the many well kempt spaces, rare and beautiful trees, flowering plants, or have afternoon tea, the perfect wholesome day out. My favourite thing to do there is a photo walk with a couple of my friends who also enjoy photography.

5) The Christmas Market

Finishing off with a seasonal one for you, and one of the best times of the year in Birmingham is during the Christmas Market, located in the buzzing city centre. Often touted as one of Europe’s biggest, the Birmingham Christmas Market has seasonal food from across the globe, independent merchants working out of the city itself, and plenty of opportunities for singing.

There’s a number of easy ways to get to the market from campus, including the nation’s only university-serving train station, to the various easy bus services which have a stop on the Vale Village. If you’ve used public transport before, then getting to the market will be a breeze.

Ultimately, only you can discover your favourite places to visit in Birmingham, but I’ve loved shared just a few of my faves, and I personally cannot wait to discover more next year.
