How do you manage your expenses? How is the cost of living crisis affecting you? Are part-time jobs easily available in Birmingham?
I’ve heard these questions a lot, and I understand because I had the same concerns last year when I first arrived at the University of Birmingham. Figuring out how to balance finances while studying abroad can be daunting, but I’ve discovered some invaluable insights into navigating part-time work opportunities here that I’d love to share.
On-Campus Jobs
Working on-campus has been incredibly convenient for me, even before arriving at the university. Thanks to resources like Worklink, I was able to explore and secure on-campus positions. There are a variety of roles to choose from like library assistants, research roles, administrative support, campus ambassadors and positions in campus dining services.
These jobs are perfect because they’re designed to fit around your academic schedule, making it easier to manage both work and study commitments. You can jumpstart your search for these opportunities right after you register, through the university’s job portal, career fairs, and department career teams. Plus, once you’ve settled in, the career team can be your go-to for finding paid internships and gaining hands-on experience that also looks good on your CV.
Work-Study Programs
The University of Birmingham goes above and beyond with its work-study programs, offering exceptional opportunities such as paid internships through the Birmingham Business School (BBS). These programs aren't limited to business; they extend to research fellowships and studentships for other departments like Engineering and Medical School. Engaging in these initiatives provides invaluable hands-on experience relating directly to your field of study while allowing networking and enhancing future career prospects.
I found myself not only earning extra cash but also benefiting from dedicated support and mentorship from university staff, ensuring a holistic educational experience that goes beyond the classroom.
Off-Campus Jobs
Birmingham is a busy city, particularly in hospitality, retail, and tutoring. Local cafes, shops, and tutoring centres are often on the lookout for part-time help, offering flexibility to fit your schedule. You can find these opportunities through Indeed, LinkedIn and even just by dropping in at local stores and restaurants. Just remember to factor in travel time and your class schedule to ensure a balanced routine that supports both your academic and work life.
As an international student, it’s crucial to know the rules about working in the UK:
