Student life at the University of Birmingham is unmatched! From sports, nightlife, university events, societies, and being in the second city, there are endless things to do to fill your cup and your social calendar.
There are loads of sports clubs at the University of Birmingham, with different levels of intensity and competition. As an English Language and Linguistics student, I have been involved in the department netball team for my entire three years at UoB and it has become a second family. We compete in the University’s Campus League, which is a social sports league against other teams that anyone can join. There are teams of housemates, course mates, and even accommodation sites! You just sign up, train, and play weekly matches.
In my second and final years, I also joined the Benchball Society for fun weekly sessions, which was a really enjoyable experience. I didn’t want high-pressure sports whilst at uni, but I still wanted to play, stay active, and make new friends, so this was the perfect fit for me! However, if something a bit more competitive is what you are looking for, the University of Birmingham has great facilities and loads of university-level sports teams you can check out.
I have been involved in the Craft Society, ELAL Society, and Redbrick Student Newspaper throughout my degree, and they have all given me fun and different opportunities. With Craft Society, I had chill weekly sessions of crafting and chatting, which was a great way to destress and have fun. In ELAL, I have done bar crawls, summer balls, The Traitors nights, pub quizzes, and all sorts of events. As part of Redbrick, I have learnt editing and writing skills, as well as going to society socials. With over 300 different student societies, there are so many different opportunities to get involved in and have fun whilst at uni!
Now, I’m not much of a night owl, but I have had some great nights out in Birmingham. From Barbara’s to The Nightingale clubs, local pubs in Selly Oak, and all the different music venues in the city, I have found that Birmingham is a great place for all sorts of nighttime events. Since living here, I have seen Renee Rapp, Lorde, Sabrina Carpenter, Florence Road, and more, without having to travel more than 15 minutes away. What’s not to love?
