When I started my undergraduate degree in Sociology, I knew I was passionate about understanding society on a systemic level. But as I progressed, I found myself particularly drawn to topics around gender and sexuality. So, when I graduated, I decided to specialise in this area by pursuing an MRes in Sexuality and Gender Studies. It felt like a natural step as Sexuality and Gender Studies is a more niche but fascinating branch of Sociology.

A fresh perspective

Coming from a Sociology background has given me a unique perspective on my postgraduate studies. I already had a strong foundation in social theories and research methods, which made the transition smoother. However, moving into a more specialised field has encouraged me to think critically in new ways and approach my research with a fresh lens. One of the biggest differences I’ve noticed is the level of independence in my studies. Rather than answering set questions, I get to create my own research questions for my assessments, which has been incredibly rewarding. 

Support in my new subject area

Although switching subject areas can feel daunting, I’ve been lucky to have lots of support from staff in my new department. My thesis supervisor, in particular, has been an incredible mentor, helping me navigate the process of writing a 20,000-word dissertation. At first, the thought of such a long piece of work was overwhelming, but my supervisor gives me regular check-ins and constructive feedback, which has allowed me to gain confidence in my research and writing skills.

Tips for students thinking about switching subject areas

If you’re considering changing subject areas between undergrad and postgrad, here are a few things I’ve learned along the way:

• Do your research – Look into the course structure, the modules, and the research opportunities available. Understanding how the course works will help you make an informed decision.
• Reach out to staff – Speaking to lecturers and course coordinators can give you valuable insight into what to expect and how best to prepare.
• Trust your gut – If you’re passionate about a subject, don’t be afraid to follow that interest. Switching subject areas has been one of the best decisions I’ve made, and it has made my academic journey so much more fulfilling.

Making the jump from BA Sociology to MRes Sexuality and Gender Studies has been an exciting and rewarding experience. While the transition required some adjustment, the opportunity to focus on a subject I truly love makes it completely worth it.
