A day in the life of a Physics student at Birmingham

The day of a Physics student can be very varied. From days where we have labs or computing to days where we just have lectures.

The most fun day for a physics student is lab day, which for me falls on Mondays. Here’s how it typically goes:

  • I get up at around 7 (since I commute and need to get the train to campus) and labs start at 9. For first year we get a different lab partner almost every week, so it’s always exciting to get to know your new course mates. Once we’ve read through the theory we get started and hopefully have gotten somewhere with our experiment before the morning session ends at 11.
  • We head straight from labs to lectures and then to lunch.
  • On a Monday I normally get lunch on campus and look around buildings I haven’t seen yet - believe it or not there’s always somewhere to explore!
  • Then it’s back to labs and time to finish off our days work. The best types of labs are the two week projects that really allow you to delve into your chosen investigation, but for normal labs I’m normally done by about 4.
  • Monday is a pretty good day to have labs - since it’s normally the longest day for Physics students, it’s nice to have it at the start of the week.
  • After my day on campus is “officially” done, I’ll either be in the library working on some assessed problems or getting ready for Circo Mondays which is a popular student night where I often run into lots of course mates!
