Engineering Eagles: An all encompassing society

The Bramall Music Building in the sunshine with students walking past

There is only one society that has subsumed my time at university, combining sport, socials, studying, pub quizzing, and even a holiday, the Engineering Eagles hockey team has brought immense delight to my time at UoB. Engineering Eagles is part of campus league hockey and includes weekly training and inter-university games. Although they are primarily students from the school of engineering, players from across the university are welcome, including myself, studying MA Education and I never feel out of place.

Hockey has been a great way to have fun, a study break and keep fit! I play alongside students of all abilities; those who have never touched a hockey stick to national league players. I sit somewhere in the middle, I’m usually a hockey goalkeeper but play outfield for Eagles, I have no idea what I’m doing but run around regardless!

I have attended a range of casual, dress-up, themed, sober, and spontaneous socials, including at least one social opportunity a week! I pick and choose which socials I go to and am never under pressure to attend. We occasionally visit sports night, dressed up of course, my favourite theme was ‘iconic men’ in recognition of Movember, I dressed up as the well-known cheese lover, Wallace, as in ‘Wallace and Gromit’ it was hilarious, and I received plenty of outfit compliments!

Engineering Eagles don’t just play hard, they work hard too. They run weekly study sessions on campus which I have found invaluable. It’s particularly helpful when I don’t want to work alone, or if I need motivation to complete an assignment! Everyone is willing to help each other too.

I’ve loved my time as an Eagle and look forward to our upcoming Prague tour, Kackaw!!!
