Exploring the city of Birmingham

Summer in Birmingham honestly exceeded every expectation I had. I know a lot of people leave as soon as exams finish but I stayed back and I am so glad I did because this city has so much more to offer than people give it credit for.

Winter

Before I get into the summer stuff, I have to give a quick mention to Birmingham in winter because it is genuinely one of the best winter markets in the UK. The city centre becomes a mini Winter Wonderland with rides, the most incredible German markets, and even an ice rink - it was so much fun and honestly the perfect thing to do with your friends before everyone disappears for the Christmas holidays.

Summer

Back to summer. The weather being nice completely changes everything. Birmingham has some brilliant hiking spots that are way more accessible than people think. I went to the Malvern Hills and the Lickey Hills and both had the most stunning views. I'll be honest, I am not the most outdoorsy person, but both hikes/walks were totally doable and so worth it. You can get there on public transport as well, so no car needed.

If you don't fancy travelling too far, Cannon Hill Park and Selly Park are perfect for a picnic - such a lovely, chilled afternoon to spend your time. And if you want something even closer, the Winterbourne Gardens right on campus are genuinely beautiful. It's free for students, all you need is your student ID. You can sit on the grass, read a book, have a wander - it's the perfect way to destress after exam season.

UoB Xtra

The biggest thing I discovered though is UoB Xtra, and if you're staying in Birmingham over summer, please take advantage of it. There are events running throughout the weekdays at a range of the times, all outdoors and all free. It’s a great way to find people staying in Birmingham over the summer holidays. They screened movies at least three times a week with snacks handed out - I went so many times.

During the day there are so many different activities to keep you busy. I went to a global showcase event where I wrote my name in Chinese calligraphy, and I still have it to this day because it was just such a special little moment. The whole week was filled with so much diversity: different cultures, traditional wear, food. It was so eye-opening and genuinely so much fun. Throughout the weeks they do a range of activities including making friendship bracelets, mug painting, tote bag decoration, and henna - which really lets your creative side come out.

On top of all of that, the University hosts a 3km run. I did not run it - let's be clear - but I stood on the side cheering my friend on and the atmosphere was incredible. So many people came out for it. I have signed up to actually run it this year though, so that should be... interesting.

Honestly if you're staying in Birmingham this summer, don't just sit in your room. There is genuinely so much going on and most of it won't cost you a penny. There are so many different areas of Birmingham other than Selly Oak, City Centre and Edgbaston, explore them and you won’t regret it. If you are looking for a good food spots, try Moseley as it has so many different cuisines and most are within reasonable prices compared to the city centre.
