Birmingham is a city full of surprises, and one of the best parts about studying here is discovering the places that make it feel like home. Whether you’re looking for somewhere to study, grab food, or just relax, there’s always something new to explore.
Sometimes the best study sessions happen outside campus. The Library of Birmingham is one of the city’s most iconic buildings – and it’s also a great place to study, with quiet spaces and amazing views. If you prefer something cosier, the cafes in Harborne or the Jewellery Quarter are perfect for a change of scenery. And of course, even a campus café can be the best spot to catch up with friends or get work done.
Birmingham’s food scene is as diverse as its student community. The Balti Triangle is the place to go for curry, while Chinatown offers East Asian restaurants and shops. For international students, the city has plenty of food shops where you find ingredients from home – a small but comforting way to stay connected. And if you love street food, keep an eye out for Digbeth Dining Club, where local vendors serve creative dishes from around the world.
If you’re into art and history, the Birmingham Museum & Art Callery and the Ikon Gallery are must-visits. For theatre lovers, the Hippodrome hosts everything from musicals to ballet. And if you just want something colourful and fun, take a walk through Digbeth to see the street art. The city also comes alive with seasonal events like the Christmas Market, which is one of the biggest in Europe.
Whether you’re into lively clubs on Broad Street, chilled bars in Digbeth, or student nights in Selly Oak, Birmingham’s nightlife has something for everyone. It’s a great way to experience the city’s energy and connect with friends outside of campus.
When you need a break from city life, Cannon Hill Park is perfect for a walk or picnic. The Botanical Gardens are peaceful and beautiful, while the Lickey Hills make a great weekend escape with views that stretch for miles. Students at University of Birmingham can also explore Winterbourne House and Gardens for free – a hidden gem right near campus. You can even take a boat ride along the canal for a unique view of the city.
For international students, exploring a new city can feel overwhelming at first. The good news is that you don’t need to see everything at once. Start small – take a walk, try a new café, or visit a food shop that reminds you of home. Birmingham is a city that grows on you, and every little adventure helps you feel more connected. Exploring isn’t about ticking off every landmark – it’s about finding the places that make you feel at home.
