At the University of Birmingham, we have so many exciting field trip and fieldwork opportunities! Getting out in the field is a fantastic way to learn hands-on and pick up essential skills for the future.

My Experiences:

As a Geology and Physical Geography student, I can tell you that fieldwork is a big part of my learning experience. Birmingham is known for offering top-notch field training. Some of the amazing places we get to explore include Pembrokeshire, Antrim, the Jurassic Coast, Cornwall, Crete, and Spain. One great perk is that all transportation and accommodation costs for these trips are covered by the university. And don’t worry about buying expensive field kits; the university provides everything you need, like hand lenses and hard hats!

In my first year, I had a blast on three different field trips! I went on a day trip to the Wrekin in Shropshire, spent a week in Pembrokeshire, South Wales, and another week in County Antrim, Northern Ireland.

When we go on residential trips, we usually stay in a youth hostel or a caravan site. In some cases, like our trip to Northern Ireland, meals are included, but if not, there are plenty of shop stops for snacks and meals.

I’ve loved every moment of my field trip experiences so far! They not only let you see real-world issues in action but also help you connect with your classmates and lecturers in a fun way. Personally, I enjoy being out in nature, making friends on my course, and getting hands-on experience while learning at my own pace. I find that fieldwork really helps solidify what I learn in lectures and it’s just a great time overall!
