Finding the Perfect Accommodation
My Journey of Settling In
My Journey of Settling In

Moving into a new country, especially as a first-timer, can stir up a lot of emotions. Despite being someone who had experienced living independently before, transitioning to life at the University of Birmingham from India was both exhilarating and nerve-wracking.
Many questions swirled in my mind: How do I navigate this new chapter? What factors should I prioritise when selecting accommodation? Will I be able to get along with my flatmates? It was a rollercoaster of emotions, but now, eight months into this journey, I can confidently affirm that choosing the right accommodation was pivotal to my settling-in process.
Like every student, I scoured numerous platforms in search of the perfect home away from home but ended up choosing university accommodation. Let me share the considerations that led me to choose Jarratt Hall in Selly Oak.
Proximity was key in my decision-making process. Unlike some private accommodations that are situated farther from campus, Jarratt Hall's proximity to the university was a game-changer. No more stressful commutes or frantic dashes to lectures, just a leisurely stroll to class, with even time to grab breakfast and savour those extra ten minutes of sleep.
Equally important was the accessibility of essential amenities. With various grocery stores nearby and the university within easy walking distance, meeting my daily needs became a breeze. The attentive staff and prompt maintenance services at Jarratt Hall further enhanced my experience, ensuring a comfortable and hassle-free living environment.
What truly made Jarratt Hall feel like home, however, was its vibrant community atmosphere. Engaging in hall rep activities and bonding with fellow students created a sense of camaraderie that eased any initial feelings of homesickness. Whether it was sharing stories over dinner or participating in communal festivities, I found comfort and belonging within this tight-knit community.
Moreover, the area near Jarratt has added to the allure of my accommodation. Boasting student-friendly restaurants, bars, and pubs, it has the perfect backdrop for weekend adventures and memorable nights out with friends.
In hindsight, choosing Jarratt Hall was undoubtedly one of the best decisions I made. It provided not just a place to live, but a supportive community and a gateway to unforgettable experiences. I'm grateful for the comfort and stability that my accommodation has offered, making this transition abroad a truly enriching one.
