When I finished high school, I knew I wanted to study science, but I didn’t have every detail of my future mapped out. I was interested in research and I definitely wanted the option to study abroad. The University of Birmingham Dubai gave me a way to keep all of those doors open.
One of the biggest things that stood out to me early on was the flexibility. I could start my Biomedical Science degree in Dubai, then transfer to the UK campus in my third year and even earn the same prestigious University of Birmingham degree. That meant I didn’t have to choose between staying close to home and eventually experiencing university life abroad: I could do both!
And honestly, starting in Dubai turned out to be the perfect foundation. Because the campus is smaller, classes felt more interactive and personal. It was easy to ask questions, contribute in lectures, and actually get to know my professors. That made a huge difference in my first two years. You’re not just another face in a big lecture hall it helped me build confidence.
At the same time, the course itself runs alongside the UK campus. The content, assessments and structure are aligned, so academically you’re on the same track. When I transferred to Edgbaston, I didn’t feel behind or out of place and I felt prepared.
Outside of lectures, Dubai offered a balance that I really valued. The campus has a close-knit community, so it’s easy to make friends and feel settled quickly. There were always places on campus to study or just relax between classes, and because you’re in Dubai, there’s always something happening beyond university too. It made the transition from school to university life feel manageable.
I also found that there were lots of opportunities to get involved; leadership roles, internships, conferences and events where you could explore different career paths. Those experiences helped me grow in ways that go beyond academics. By the time I moved to the UK, I had a much clearer idea of what I was interested in and what I wanted from the rest of my degree.
Looking back, starting at the Dubai campus feels like a strong stepping stone, giving me the space to adjust to university and develop both academically and personally before taking the next step. If you’re considering beginning your degree in Dubai but are unsure about transferring later, I can honestly say it prepared me well. It gave me flexibility, support, and a solid foundation, which is exactly what I needed at that stage.
