I highly recommend securing an internship during your time at university. It’s a great way to gain insight into potential career paths, develop key skills, and open up future opportunities.

After graduation, I’m considering a career in communications, specifically in policy-related PR or public affairs. While this might seem like a shift from my PPE degree, many of the skills I’ve developed such as research, and written communication, are just as relevant! My interest in this field was inspired during my second year when I interned at a PR agency in Birmingham. I still work with the firm on an ad-hoc basis and have gained valuable experience that will benefit my future career.

The PR firm I interned with specialises in Birmingham’s hospitality and restaurant sector, so I had the opportunity to work on campaigns, create social media content, and conduct media outreach for a range of clients. My responsibilities included writing press releases, supporting events, and even helping out on food-related photoshoots! This hands-on experience gave me a real understanding of how the communications industry works and the fast-paced nature of the field.

Beyond skill development, internships help expand your professional network.

During my time at the PR agency, I connected with industry professionals, some of whom I’m still in touch with and have given me valuable advice as I search for job opportunities. Internships also build confidence. At first, stepping into a professional setting can feel daunting, but over time, I became more comfortable in meetings, networking with professionals, and putting forward my ideas.

Internships are a great way to explore different industries, understand your strengths, and gain clarity on what you enjoy. The Careers Network at Birmingham is incredibly helpful when reviewing CVs, preparing for interviews, and finding opportunities, and has been beneficial to me in my journey. Overall, my PR internship was a super valuable experience, and I look forward to pursuing a career in communications after I graduate.
