Hello, I'm Lorna! I'm a final year Philosophy, Religion and Ethics (PRE) student.

I chose to study PRE at UoB because I really love the combination of both Philosophy and Religion. I think they're so interlinked and very similar subjects skill wise! Over my time at university I have realised that I'm more passionate about religion and ethics, specifically applied ethics in religion and theology like feminism and sex ethics.
I chose Birmingham as my top choice during the UCAS application because of the range of research and staff focusing on different topics such as women and faith and lived religions. The PTR Department is so welcoming and really honours the diversity of religions and culture in the city, which makes learning immersive and enjoyable! There was such a variety of opportunities at the university that really drew me in too, such as working for the university and the range of societies available. When I attended the open days I was so amazed by how beautiful the campus was and still is. The amount of greenery made me feel like I was back at home in the Cotswolds, which assured me about any future homesickness.
One of the aspects of the student experience I have really enjoyed is all the events! During February for LGBT+ History Month there are such a range of fun and informative events about queer history, which is super important - one of the events we had in PTR was a decorating cupcakes event with rainbow colours to symbolise the LGBT+ flag. The student experience is super inclusive and there is a wide range of events for everyone available. In my spare time amongst working and studying, I also like to volunteer at a charity called Children's Book Project. Knowing that I am working hard to give back to the city that I have spent nearly three years of my life in is very important to me, especially as I would love to work in the charity sector after university.
One of the modules I have really enjoyed at university was Christmas and Ethical Consuming in third year, which focused on Christmas from both a religious and secular lens. As a part of the module we went on a trip to the Christmas Market in Birmingham and watched Christmas films! My first essay I wrote for this module was about feminism and the role of women around Christmas and Mrs Claus.
