How joining a volunteering society enriched my university experience!

University is a fantastic opportunity to try new things, with over 300 societies and numerous sports clubs to choose from.

A society fair

I highly recommend getting involved with societies, as it has thoroughly enriched my university experience.

In my first year, I was interested in volunteering, and after attending the societies fair, I discovered UoB’s Action Against Homelessness Society. I began volunteering at local homeless shelters every week through the society and not only did I make friends through this experience, but it was also incredibly rewarding to support the local community and meet people with inspiring stories.

By my second year, I wanted to take on more responsibility within the society, so I ran for a committee position and was elected as treasurer. Managing the society’s finances gave me valuable skills such as budgeting and a greater sense of responsibility in the society as I also enjoyed organising fundraisers, including bake sales and a charity concert.

In my third year, I took on the role of President, which I have thoroughly enjoyed. Leading a team has given me invaluable experience, and I have loved having even more creative direction with the society, such as by organising group volunteer drives. As a society, we collaborate with several homeless shelters and charities in Birmingham, sending university volunteers each week to support them while also fundraising on their behalf.

One of my most memorable experiences this year was participating in a ‘Big Sleepout’ alongside the committee for a charity supporting youth homelessness. This experience was not only eye-opening, but we were able to raise just under £1,250 for the charity, making it even more meaningful. We have also received a Guild Award from our student union in recognition of our hard work and impact this year!

Being part of this society has really shaped my university experience. I’ve not only developed valuable soft skills such as leadership, teamwork, and event planning, which will benefit me after university, but most importantly, I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to the community, and make valuable connections and friendships!

My advice to anyone starting university? Get involved in a society. Whether it’s a sports club, a social group, or a volunteering group, saying yes to new experiences will make your university experience so much better! Additionally, I encourage students in their second and third years to take on committee roles to get further involved in societies!
