Choosing university accommodation is one of your first big decisions and the right choice can shape your routine, wellbeing, and social life.  At the University of Birmingham, each accommodation village offers a distinct experience, so understanding your priorities is the best starting point. Once you know what matters most to you, whether that is convenience, community, atmosphere, or access to facilities, the options become far clearer.

Identify your priorities

Before comparing accommodation villages, it helps to identify what you want your day-to-day life to look like. Ask yourself:

  • Do I need to be close to certain campus buildings for early lectures or busy timetables?
  • Do I want shops, cafés, and restaurants nearby for convenience?
  • Will I be training, playing sport, or using the gym frequently?
  • Am I looking for a quieter living environment or a lively, sociable one?
  • What type of room and facilities suit my budget and preferences?

Understanding these factors provides a solid framework for selecting a village that aligns with your lifestyle.

Explore the accommodation villages

Pritchatts Park - campus convenience and calm spaces

If proximity to campus is your top priority, Pritchatts Park is one of the strongest options. The location is exceptionally convenient as it’s just a few minutes’ walk from key academic areas such as the Medicine buildings, the ERI building, and the Library. The University train station is also close by, making commuting or travelling home straightforward.

Pritchatts is one of the most recently refurbished villages, so its Wi-Fi and facilities are modern and reliable.

Pritchatts has a quieter, self-contained atmosphere, offering a clean and peaceful environment supported by 24/7 security. For students who value calm, structure, and short commutes, it provides a very reliable and comfortable living experience.

Selly Oak - shopping, sports and balanced student life

Selly Oak is ideal for students who want convenience and an active lifestyle. With supermarkets, like Aldi and Sainsbury’s, cafés, and retail options minutes away, it is excellent for day-to-day living. It also sits close to campus, making it easy to get to lectures without long walks.

For students involved in sport, Selly Oak is particularly convenient. It is near the Bournbrook pitches, so if you are thinking of joining any sports team that will require you to use an outdoor space, either a BUCS or a social sport, this will be particularly ideal. You are also within walking distance of the Sport & Fitness gym and Tiverton Gym, both amazingly equipped spaces. This combination makes Selly Oak ideal for those who want easy access to training, fitness sessions, and campus life simultaneously.

Selly Oak also offers direct, walkable access to the Worcester & Birmingham Canal towpaths, providing a scenic route ideal for running, cycling, or taking peaceful sunset walks.

Finally, it is also conveniently located near popular student-filled pubs such as The Goose and The Bristol Pear, making social evenings easy to incorporate into day-to-day life.

The Vale - social, community-focused living

If you prioritise a lively, student-centred environment, The Vale offers exactly that. It accommodates one of the main proportions of students, a strong sense of community, and a scenic lakeside setting that makes it one of the most recognisable accommodation villages.

Although it sits slightly further from central campus than Pritchatts or Selly Oak, it provides excellent on-site amenities. The village has its own Costcutter, making everyday essentials and quick food shops exceptionally convenient. It also features the newly built Vale Gym, giving students an accessible fitness option right within the accommodation village.

So, for many students, the combination of social life, facilities, and communal energy makes The Vale a standout choice.

Finding your perfect fit

There’s no single ‘best’ accommodation - only the best fit for your priorities. Whether you want calm convenience, balanced living, or vibrant community, UoB has an option for you. Understanding your needs is the first step towards finding the place that will make your university experience feel truly your own.
