Joining a society at University
It might be a cliché that joining a society or club at University is the “best thing you can do”, but in my case it is definitely the case!
It might be a cliché that joining a society or club at University is the “best thing you can do”, but in my case it is definitely the case!

When I started my BSc in Birmingham in 2021, I knew I wanted to join BUAC (Birmingham University Athletics Club) as I was already a competitive runner and the club was one of the best in the country, however I wasn’t expecting the community and club culture to single-handily shape my Uni experience! I have made some of my best friends from BUAC, people I didn’t know before coming and people I now live with that I used compete against when I was younger. Being part of a sports team at Uni means you always have that mental escape from work and enables you to meet so many like-minded people from different courses. It has definitely tested my resilience at times with some injuries along the way, but the beauty of the club is that there will always be someone in the same boat to talk to and great support from the superb coaching team. My favourite moment in the club has to attending BUCS, with BUAC pretty much getting a clean sweep of the medals in the 2024 Cross Country Champs and me winning bronze at Outdoor Track & Field in the 2000m S/C. Furthermore, I have been lucky enough to give back to the club by being a key member of their media team. Over the last few years I have created engaging Instagram posts and have been the head of media for the competitions committee this year promoting our track and field series online.
Although an individual sport, it really does feel like a massive family, and I know my Uni experience would be totally different without it. I might be biased, but I would definitely recommend joining a sports team or society!
