I chose to study linguistics after really enjoying English Language at A-level, which gave me my first insight into linguistics as the science of language.
English Language and Linguistics explores how language is essential to humans, including non-verbal forms such as sign language and gestures, which are just as important as speech. I was drawn to this course because it examines language in real-world contexts and how communication shapes society.
One of my favourite modules is The Structure of English. The module is divided into grammar and phonetics and phonology, with the latter standing out to me the most. Phonetics and phonology explore how speech sounds are produced and how our minds categorise and represent them. I particularly enjoyed topics such as sound change and vowel features, which highlighted the scientific nature of language. This module was especially relevant as it links closely with Speech and Language Therapy, a career pathway I am currently exploring. Studying how the vocal tract and its articulators work in detail changed the way I think about speech and made me appreciate just how complex and essential language really is.
Another favourite module of mine is Discourse Analysis. The module explores a range of qualitative methods used by linguists to uncover underlying meanings that shape social context and ideology in both spoken and written texts. It particularly stood out to me because of the creative freedom within the assessments. As a fan of the K-pop boy group ENHYPEN, I completed a discourse analysis of an article discussing their artistry and musical concept, which I really enjoyed. Through this, I explored themes such as fan identity, obsession and the pressures of being in the spotlight. This module developed my critical thinking skills and encouraged me to look beyond surface meanings in language.
This course has broadened my perspectives on language and encouraged me to explore Speech and Language Therapy as a potential career pathway. English Language and Linguistics provides the fundamental scientific understanding needed for further study. For prospective students, it’s a diverse, engaging degree that challenges how you see language and its role in everyday life.
