Looking back on this year at Birmingham

Highlights of the year

This year was full of small but significant victories - from tackling tough assignments to meeting new people. Through my student ambassador role, I found myself stepping outside my comfort zone more than ever. I tried new things and even put some of the technical knowledge from my course into practice. I got to work on more technically in-depth concepts and get a feel of what it would be like to work in a large multi-disciplinary team. Writing blogs and creating content gave me the chance to share my experiences with others, which has been one of the most rewarding parts of my year.

I also focused more on building communities and relationships, attending networking events, careers fairs, and community gatherings like Together Beyond. They may seem small, but they really do make a huge difference.

Challenges and lessons learned

Of course, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Balancing studies, work, and personal life was sometimes overwhelming, and there were moments when I felt drained or burnt out. I learned that it’s okay to slow down, take breaks, and admit when things feel heavy. I found it really helpful to use the support the University provides, like the wellbeing team or even just speaking to my personal tutor. And if you don’t want to go that route, a quick call with family or friends goes a long way.

Hopes for the future

Looking ahead, I want to explore Birmingham more fully. I’m excited to step into places I’ve only walked past before - from the Library of Birmingham to canal boat rides – and to keep building connections that make the city feel like home. Next year, I hope to make time for those experiences, while also focusing on my academic and career goals. More than anything, I want to keep growing, connecting, and enjoying the journey.

Top tips for international students

• Take it at your own pace – you don’t need to explore everything at once.
• Balance study with fun – the city has plenty of both, and you’ll discover more as you go.
• Don’t be afraid to ask for help – whether it’s academic support or just advice on where to shop, people are willing to guide you. Never feel like any question is silly or irrelevant.
• Celebrate small wins – they motivate you enough to keep going.

Closing reflection

This year reminded me that growth isn’t always about big leaps – it’s about the quiet, everyday moments that shape who we are. Each step adds to your story, and I’m grateful for mine. I can’t wait to see what the next one brings.
