One of the greatest blessings of being a student at the University of Birmingham is the wealth of opportunities to grow academically, both personally and professionally. It’s easy to think your career is something to worry about later and then miss out on the plethora of opportunities available here at UoB. I’ll be sharing you some ways you can make the most out of career support whilst studying at the University of Birmingham.

Make Use of the Careers Network

The Careers Network is a university-wide, dedicated employability team to help and it spans across all 5 colleges. This is a gift that every student should take advantage of. From CV reviews and interview coaching to employer events and mentoring, there’s always something to help you grow. Booking an appointment early can bring so much clarity about your goals. They’ll help you identify your strengths, explore potential career paths, and connect you with employers who align with your aspirations.

Get Involved in Work Experience and Part-Time Jobs

Gaining work experience isn’t just about adding to your CV, it’s about learning to be better as an individual. Whether through internships, volunteering, or part-time work on campus, every experience shapes your character and builds valuable skills. The University’s Worklink Portal is a great place to find opportunities that fit around your studies. Jobs like student ambassador roles or working in hospitality teach discipline, teamwork, and responsibility, qualities that help prepare you for future career opportunities.

Explore CEPLER (for Law Students) and Departmental Support

For law students like me, CEPLER (the Centre for Professional Legal Education and Research) is an incredible platform. It offers workshops, pro bono opportunities, and connections with top firms, all designed to help you grow as a future legal professional. Even if you’re not studying law, your department has similar support available. Get involved in events, competitions, or mentoring schemes. When you step out and engage, you’ll see how these experiences position you for excellence.

Seek Out Internship and Placement Opportunities

Internships and placements can be the bridge between university and your calling. The University of Birmingham offers several structured programs like the Global Challenge Internship and Birmingham Undergraduate Internship Programme (BUIP). These experiences don’t just give you practical skills, they help you discern what type of work aligns with your gifts and values. Be open, be curious, and give your best.

Build Connections and Network Intentionally

Networking isn’t about self-promotion; it’s about building genuine connections and learning from others. I did have a warped idea of networking initially because I can be a bit shy, but I would say really network whilst you’re here. Attend career events, connect with alumni, and speak with your lecturers or mentors. Sometimes, a single conversation can lead to opportunities that shape your path. Be humble, approachable, and intentional as you grow your network.

At the end of the day, making the most of career support isn’t just about chasing success, it’s about self-improvement. The University of Birmingham provides the tools, but it’s your responsibility to take advantage of them.
