I am currently working as a psychotherapist at Shanghai Children's Hospital in China. I mainly work with people aged 0-18, including some children diagnosed with autism, ADHD, or emotional disorders. I conduct assessments and provide psychological treatment for them.
I conduct diagnostic assessments for children who may have autism and meet with their parents to discuss how best to help their children.
Another part of my work involves providing psychological therapy to children and adolescents with emotional issues. I primarily use play therapy, as many children find it difficult to express their feelings through words, making play a more accessible method for them. Additionally, I conduct family consultations with their parents to discuss how to adjust their approach to better support their children.
I looked for information by checking the hospital's official website for job postings, as well as on WeChat's official account and Redbook. Additionally, I would share relevant job postings with my friends. Then I would go to take the written exam or interview.
I did not major in psychology as an undergraduate, so the master's programme in mental health gave me more knowledge of psychology and taught me English academic writing and basic research skills.
To be honest, this may be more helpful for finding work in the UK, but less so in China.
Enjoy your student life, think carefully about what kind of work you truly love, and be brave enough to give it a try.
The assignments allowed me to learn proactively, gain a deep understanding of certain topics, and the feedback from the teachers was also very helpful.
I really like some aspects of British culture, which continue to influence me to this day. The educational system is very different from what I was used to, but it was a great experience and enhanced my research skills.
