I chose to study at UOB because I loved the layout of the course. I was able to choose so many different modules and specialise into an area I was interested in. The range of different modules available to choose in my 2nd, 3rd and 4th year couldn't compare to what I saw elsewhere. Additionally, all the teaching staff are active research staff and integrate their research into the lectures making content relatable to real life research. Another factor was how beautiful and green campus is. There is so much open space around campus to sit with friends when it is sunny, and when I feel like some retail therapy, Birmingham centre is only 8 minutes away on the train!
I was choosing universities during Covid, so open days were all online. We managed to visit campus for a walk around and that helped me in my decision as I could envision myself walking around. Additionally, the effort put in by staff on the online open days was exceptional.
My biggest achievement is working in the BioSoc committee for 2 years; as Vice President, and then President. This gave me the chance to organise events for Biosciences and get close with staff members. I was able to be part of decision making when it came to student experiences in the School of Biosciences.
I am going into teaching as a secondary school science teacher through TeachFirst.
I learnt so many soft skills at UOB which are important in job finding. I have improved my public speaking and presentation skills in addition to being able to think more analytically and critically about the world. The university made me a more organised person and helped with managing time so that I could better balance studies with taking part in different societies, having down time, and being able to do chores.
As a student and having so many different opportunities presented to me helped me decide to go into teaching. Working with the university and the School of Biosciences made me a more confident person and bought me out of my shell.
Be curious, everyone is always there to give you the opportunities to learn more. So if there is a topic you are interested, make a network with the staff involved and you never know what doors will open for your future.
