My first spring in Birmingham: When the city comes to life

Asma describes the impact that springtime has on the city, as well as her student experience.

After months of grey skies, Birmingham suddenly changed. The sun started to appear more often, the trees began showing off their fresh green leaves, and flowers found their way into every corner of the city in the most beautiful way.

I never expected how much this change would affect me. Every morning, I wake up and look at the tree in front of my balcony, now full of life and colour, and it feels like it’s quietly telling me: "Stay a little longer. You don’t need to escape the summer."

It’s amazing how nature can transform everything - from cold, grey, and quiet days into something full of light, energy, and colour. The whole city feels different. People are outside more, smiling more, and even simple walks feel special.

I’ve noticed more events coming to life too - marathons, small festivals, and art exhibitions. Birmingham starts to feel alive in a completely new way during spring.

To be honest, I haven't explored as much as I wanted yet. Most of my time has been focused on my research. But even without going far, I've learned that enjoying spring doesn't always mean making big plans.

Sometimes, it's as simple as:

  • Sitting in the sun for a few minutes between tasks.
  • Taking a short walk around your area.
  • Drinking your coffee by the window instead of your desk.

You don't have to visit every park or attend every event to feel the season. Even small moments can change your mood and give you energy. In Birmingham, even a simple canal walk can shift your whole day. There's something calming about the water, the gentle movement, and people simply enjoying their time.

What I noticed the most wasn't just the weather - it was the people. Birmingham feels different in spring because everyone suddenly comes alive. Parks fill up, friends sit outside laughing, and even strangers seem more relaxed and open. There's a sense of energy in the air that you don't really notice during the colder months.

Even on days when I'm busy with my work, just seeing this change around me lifts my mood. It reminds me that life is happening all around me, and that I'm part of it, even if I'm not always in the middle of it. There's something comforting about that feeling.

Spring in Birmingham isn't only about where you go, but the atmosphere you're surrounded by. It makes the city feel warmer, not just in temperature, but in spirit.

And maybe this spring is just the beginning - for me to explore more, enjoy more, and experience Birmingham in a new way.

Because sometimes, a season doesn't just change the city. It changes you too.
