My first Summer School experience as an ambassador

Read Ella's joyful and eye-opening experience as a Summer School Ambassador, from early mornings to discos and making a real difference for Year 10s

Year 10 pupils doing activities

Last summer, I took on the role of a Year 10 Summer Residential Ambassador, a journey of fun, learning and nostalgia.

During the stay, we stayed at Bournbrook aka my first-year accommodation at university. It was here in July, that I embarked on a fun-filled week that was both a challenge and a joy.

Day 1: Meet and Greet

My first day kicked off at the university station, where I was posted to meet the Year 10s arriving for the program. In true Birmingham fashion, it rained as I made my way to the station but, luckily, it stopped just in time for the arrivals. My main task was to greet the children warmly and send them via minibus to our venue for the day. This was a day dedicated to introduction: kids getting to know each other, being sorted into groups, and settling into what would be their home for the next few days. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement and a bit of nervous energy, which quickly dissipated as everyone began to feel comfortable.

Day 2: The Challenge of Early Mornings

The most challenging part? Waking up my accommodation kids! But the promise of a full English breakfast awaiting us was motivation enough to ensure we weren't late. The day was packed with fun activities - you truly had to be there to experience the magic. However, I will spill on one highlights: the disco. Surprisingly, it wasn't awkward in the least; instead, it was filled with laughter, dance moves, and an infectious energy that only a group of Year 10s can bring.

Day 3: A Bittersweet Farewell

The third day was all about goodbyes, which were bittersweet. By this time, I had grown quite fond of the kids I met, especially my accommodation and day groups. It was fulfilling to see how much they had enjoyed their short time with us. Officially, it was the end of my duties for this group, but my work wasn't done yet. I had to prepare to do it all over again the next day with new kids. By now, I felt like a pro!

The Encore: More Summer Schools

The experience was so rewarding that I went on to work at a Year 12 Summer residential. This, though more challenging, was equally fun. Each day presented new learning opportunities, not just for the kids but for me as well. The sense of achievement and the smiles on the kids' faces at the end of each session were priceless.

Reflecting on my time as a Summer Residential Ambassador, I can wholeheartedly say it was a phenomenal experience. It taught me more about leadership, patience, and the sheer joy of making a difference in young lives. If you're considering such a role, don't hesitate - it's a fulfilling job that offers more rewards than you might expect. I rate this experience 10/10 and recommend it to anyone looking for an engaging and meaningful way to spend their summer!
