My first year journey as a Digital Media and Communications student

My name is Ella-Mary and I’m a current first year Digital Media and Communications student. I have enjoyed my time so far and I'm looking forward to year two.

I live not far from UoB (Coventry) and when looking at universities I wanted to find the perfect institution that was not too far from home while still a step outside my comfort zone, in a brand new, vibrant city. After a lot of researching I came across the quite new BA Digital Media and Communications program at the University and was impressed by the scope of possibility within the program and element of creativity it allowed its students to cultivate.

Since beginning my course, I have had so much fun meeting like-minded people, expanding my knowledge of media and building my own creativity. One of my favourite modules this year has been Discovering Creative Practice - I have been able to collaborate in making things like podcasts which is new and exciting. My lecturers have made the course and content fun to learn which has been great, especially as Media is a subject I had never taken before. Especially in Discovering Creative Practice, where they have been thoughtful and accommodating by taking into consideration not only our strengths and weaknesses, but what we would like to learn.

At the beginning of the year, one of my goals within the module was to learn how to use a professional camera to shoot images and videos, and edit them using photoshop. By second semester this is something I have practiced many times, and now am a lot more confident doing and talking about.

The social life in Birmingham has been wonderful to experience and be a part of — I’ve found that as the second-largest city in the country, my friends and I have not run out of activities to try and places to go. Upon reflection, this factor was something that I was apprehensive about when considering university, however I am glad to say that the city has not disappointed me in the slightest. I have also been pleasantly surprised by the amount there is to do and enjoy within campus itself. For example, getting involved in society events like film nights has been a brilliant way to branch out and do something different.
