Exams are nearly over and university open days are starting soon. Attending an open day is an exciting opportunity to explore the campus, meet future lecturers, and get a feel for student life. To make the most out of your visit, it's crucial to ask the right questions, especially about accommodation. Here's a guide to some key questions you can ask during your visit.
"What are the laundry prices for students?"
Don't let yourself be surprised by the prices. On average, universities charge per wash and dry, so get a clear picture of these expenses. Maybe it's worth asking people how they manage their washing. For example, I aimed for one wash a week and an additional wash when I had to change my bedding. I also got a drying rake to minimise drying costs.
"What is the typical flat size and how many students share a flat?"
Understanding the size of the flat will help you prepare for living arrangements. I remember being unprepared to live in a flat with six other people!. Ask for details on the different types of accommodations available, from studio flats to shared apartments, and how these options might fit your lifestyle.
"What kitchen and bedroom items are included in the accommodation?"
This will help you know what to bring and what can be left at home. For instance, I once bought a bin, only to find out it was already provided!
"What social spaces are available in the accommodation villages?"
Ask about common rooms, study areas, gyms, and outdoor spaces. Knowing the availability of these spaces can give you an idea of the social life in the accommodation.
"What events are held at each accommodation village and how frequently do they occur?"
Regular events like movies nights, quiz nights, and social gatherings can enhance your university experience and help you settle in more quickly.
"How far is the accommodation from amenities like supermarkets, libraries, and public transport?"
This will help you gauge the convenience and plan your daily routines better.
"How did current students choose their accommodation and how are they finding it?"
Talking to current students about their experiences can provide valuable insights. This can help you make a more informed choice.
"What makes this accommodation particularly convenient for students?"
This could include things like on-site maintenance, 24/7 security, proximity to lecture halls, or extra facilities like bike storage or a campus shuttle service.
