With the goal of becoming a Marketing Director, a high-quality degree was integral. The University of Birmingham’s Business School stood out to me, with its CIM and triple-crown accreditation. The year 2 module ‘Event and Festival management’ appealed to me, and set UoB apart from other universities. On visiting the campus, I was immediately sold, it was everything I’d pictured in a university. I especially liked the green open spaces and beautiful buildings, particularly Aston Webb.
While I enjoyed my first year at UoB, I feel much more comfortable in my second year, and have a great group of friends. One of the highlights has been moving into my second-year house and decorating my room. It was a bit strange living in a house instead of university accommodation, but now it feels very homely. This year has been filled with a variety of fun social activities, including parties, musicals, movie nights, and a Christmas dinner with my housemates. As someone who takes a while to adapt to change, I was slightly concerned after first year that I wasn’t getting the full university experience, as I hadn’t been involved in many social events. This year my friendships have strengthened, and I’ve met some great new people. Having a job on campus has introduced me to a fun group of people, and allowed me to take part in more social events. My course has also become more interesting (and challenging!) this year, and I’m looking forward to the ‘Event and Festival Management’ module in term 2.
During my third year I will be undertaking an industrial placement, hopefully in a fashion focused business. In an ideal world this will lead to a job after graduation, but if not will still be vital experience. I plan on doing a Masters at some point after graduating, and gaining lots of hands-on experience in fashion marketing roles. While my goals have remained largely the same since starting university, my course and work experiences have opened my eyes to new opportunities and strengthened my desire to work hard and achieve my goals.
