Societies at the University of Birmingham

University life isn't complete without involvement in societies. Whether you do one or five, it's a way to meet new friends with shared interests, do a hobby you love or a way to learn a new one.
In my first year, I signed up for Cricket (and Sherlock Holmes Society, where we had weekly mysteries to solve!). Cricket had women who had played for years and complete beginners like me. We had weekly practices on Monday, and it was a fun hour and a half to learn a new sport with some new friends. Hitting a cricket ball was a great way to get out any frustration from my uni readings!
Some of my best university memories have come from cricket. Each Wednesday at the uni is sports night, where each sports club will have its own dress-up theme, you hang out with your friends at someone's house, and then if you fancy, you go to the guild which turns into a big club. It's great fun to look out your window on a Wednesday night and see the hordes of themed students.
I became known for my costumes, winning the best costume prize in both semesters. From Canada the country to a Wild West tumbleweed (my favourite being Wario with a big moustache) each week was filled with new ideas and the construction of a new costume. My housemates were kept on their toes, peaking into my room each Tuesday to see what I was making that week.
The community has been amazing, and in my final year after my year abroad, I'm living with two friends from cricket! My involvement with cricket has been a highlight of my time at the University of Birmingham.
