Societies at the University of Birmingham

Joining societies really helped me settle in at UoB. After attending the insightful societies fair, I joined the Fashion and Marketing societies. The fair was really useful for seeing what’s available, there were some societies I’d never have thought of! It also gave me the opportunity to speak to the members and get a feel for how often the society met and what sort of events they put on. Events hosted by my societies were especially helpful at the start of term when I didn’t know many people. The Fashion Society hosted an upcycling event at a local cafe which was especially fun, we brought old clothes with us and painted them, while enjoying plenty of coffee and cake! The Marketing Society has also been useful since I’m doing a degree with Marketing; they host guest speakers and offer lots of opportunities to learn about the industry. A particularly interesting talk was given by Accentuate Marketing Agency, who shared their knowledge about the latest digital marketing trends and offered valuable advice. The Marketing Society are also hosting an end of year ball – which I am very excited to get dressed up for!

I definitely recommend joining societies when you come to UoB, and if you’re not sure what’s on offer don’t forget to call in to the societies fair! Also, you can join different societies each year if you’d like to; next year I would love to join the Film Society, who put on two free movie screenings each week. So don’t worry if you hear of more societies you’d like to join throughout the year!
