One of the best parts of university is the vast array of clubs and societies on offer. From cultural organizations to niche hobby groups, there's truly something for everyone. Personally, I got involved with the Nepalese society. Not only did I meet some of my closest friends through it, but I even joined the committee as a social secretary. It's the perfect way to connect with others who share your culture and background.
While joining clubs can be a little pricey upfront, it's 100% worth it for the unforgettable experiences. My advice? Push yourself to step out of your comfort zone and try new things! I never imagined I'd try pole dancing or Muay Thai but giving them a try opened a whole new world. The volleyball club was also amazing - we even recently went on a team tour to Portugal!
The opportunities extend far beyond just social clubs too. As part of my degree, I spent an entire year studying abroad in Hong Kong. Hiking overnight to watch the sunrise whilst eating ramen on top of a hill to fight the cold is a core memory. Back on campus, I completed the Birmingham Award in my first year where we created an app promoting local artists. The Birmingham Project is a one-week challenge for first-year undergraduates, taking place on campus developing innovative solutions to social or environmental issues in groups from the university. It was such a valuable way to develop professional skills like teamwork and creativity.
One regret? Not utilizing the careers services earlier. They're an absolute goldmine for internships, on-campus jobs, skill workshops and more to ensure you're ready for the working world. Don't make the same mistake!
Between joining societies and taking advantage of academic opportunities, university cultivates some truly unforgettable experiences. Don't be afraid to get out there and make the most of your time!
