Student night outs in Birmingham: Where to go and what to expect

Your guide to the best student nights out in Birmingham - from Guild classics to city‑centre hotspots and Digbeth events.

Are you a first-year student unsure on where to go on your first night in Birmingham? Or are you a third-year student sick of the same old clubs? Then you’re in the right place! Here are my top five recommendations for a student night out in Birmingham and what to expect.

The Guild (Sports Night and FAB)

Located on our very own university campus is the Guild, holding two club nights a week: Sports Night on a Wednesday, and FAB on a Saturday. This is perfectly situated a short walk from any university accommodation and Selly Oak, meaning no expensive Ubers and a safe walk home with your friends. Expect to see everyone you know (as it’s university students only!), incredible costumes from the sports societies on a Wednesday night, multiple rooms of all types of music, a silent disco, and great student drink deals!

Circo

This is a personal favourite of mine…Circo! Especially convenient for those living in Selly Oak, Circo is just round the corner in the middle of the high street. Expect a huge queue if you get there too late (because it is so popular), a Papa John’s in the middle of the beer garden, unlimited VK drink deals, a Just Dance machine and great vibes. It is students only, so it is usually full of lots of friendly UoB faces.

Albert Schloss

Albert Schloss is in the city centre in Chamberlain Square. It brings great vibes and amazing live music to Birmingham. Drinks are a bit pricier, but this is the perfect place to go for a special occasion, to celebrate the submission of your essays, or if you’re a third year looking to go somewhere different (bear in mind that on the weekend the venue is over 21s).

Broad Street

Broad Street is home to a range of bars and clubs in Birmingham city centre, notably Barbara’s, Rosie’s and Snobs. If you are in first year this is a great place to start, the drinks are cheap and the clubs have great student discounts, they are always full of people, and there are lots of clubs to go between until you find one you love! There are also unlimited chicken shops on Broad Street to satisfy your after-club cravings which is ideal.

Lunar Springs

Finally, Lunar Springs, located in Digbeth, is the place to be for all kinds of events. They host bingo lingo (fun bingo with music, funny prizes, and dance battles), music events like raves, as well as bottomless brunches and so much more. Especially picturesque in the summer, tables and the dance floor are under the iconic Digbeth arches covered in fairy lights! With food and drink outlets in the venue, and lots of additional clubs in Digbeth to go to after your event is finished, you are always guaranteed a good night here
