University life can get busy and overwhelming at times, and one of my favourite ways to calm my mind and move my body is to go for a run.
Whether you're training for a race, trying to build healthy habits, or just looking for a break from studying, Birmingham has some amazing running spots.
Here are my top three places to run in Birmingham as a student.
Cannon Hill Park is probably my favourite place to run in Birmingham. It's incredibly green, spacious and has plenty of different routes, meaning you can easily adjust your distance depending on how far you want to go.
One of the best things about running here is the atmosphere. Every Saturday morning, the park hosts a parkrun with hundreds of participants. Whether you're a complete beginner or a regular runner, it's a great way to feel part of a community and to meet other local runners.
The Vale is another brilliant running spot, especially for University of Birmingham students. The route around the lake and student accommodation is peaceful and scenic, making it a lovely choice for an early morning or evening run.
One of the things I particularly like about running at the Vale is how safe it feels. The area is well-lit and usually busy with students, so if you're a solo runner, this is a great option.
It's also really convenient, as you can easily extend your route onto campus and around the University grounds if you want to add a bit more distance.
One warning, though: it is rather hilly! The inclines can be challenging but they are a great way to build strength and stamina.
One of Birmingham's most popular running spots is the canal network. Running along the canal is perfect if you want a flatter, more relaxed route without constantly stopping for roads or traffic lights.
During the daytime, the canals are usually busy with walkers, runners and cyclists, which helps the area feel safer and more lively.
One fun fact about Birmingham is that it has more miles of canals than Venice, with around 35 miles of waterways running through the city. Therefore, running along the canals is a great way to explore different parts of Birmingham while enjoying a quiet escape from busy roads and traffic.
Running doesn't have to be intense or competitive to be beneficial. Even a short run can help clear your mind after a long day of lectures and deadlines. Whether you prefer the greenery of Cannon Hill Park, the student atmosphere of The Vale Village. or the flat routes along Birmingham's canals, there's something for everyone.
