Top tips for open days

Read Katie's top tips to make the most of your open day at Birmingham - from tours to talking to students, here’s how to see if it’s the right fit for you.

Students on campus during Open Day

When I went to open days for university, I remember them feeling quite overwhelming. Our campus is very big and, especially on open days, there can be lots going on. Here are my main top tips to help you have the best experience on our open days and help you to see if the University of Birmingham is the best fit for you!

Go on a campus tour

These are a great way to see the main areas of campus! The tours are also led by current students at the university so it is a great way to gain insight into what life is like as a student. As well as this, you can ask the student any questions you have about university life!

Go see our student accommodation

This is where you will be living for the first year of university so visiting will give you a good idea of what you ideally want from your room as well as what the prices of the different accommodations are. We have many flats that range from being en-suite to shared bathrooms and catered to self-catered. Visiting our sites will also give you a good idea of the welcoming environment that our accommodations have and will hopefully make you feel less nervous about moving away!

Talk to your faculty's staff/students

This will give you a good idea of what to expect from the course you are applying for and if the course is the right fit for you. The difference between school teaching and university teaching is very different, so speaking to people about what to expect is a good way to prepare yourself for the transition.

Take pictures/write things down

A lot of open days for different universities can happen in the space of a few weeks so it may get confusing and hard to remember which aspects of which you liked/disliked. A good way to ensure you remember everything is to take notes that you can revisit when making your final decision of which universities you want to apply to.

Visit the main areas of the campus as well as your faculty's buildings

Trust me, you will spend the majority of your time in the main buildings on campus such as the main library and the guild of students. Make sure to visit these places to make sure you could see yourself in those places!

Those are my top tips for when you come to our open days! I can only recommend making the most of this opportunity!
